Well, Ive been here more than a week now and a lot has happened since Ive been here! Matamoros is a lot hotter than Ohio J (Pictures to come soon but I cant seem to upload them).
We met our host families on Monday. The Nicaragua team has a family with a single mother and seven children. The oldest two children are out of the house during the week for work, but the 5 youngest are at the house – 3 boys, Trinidad, Moricio, Hector, and 2 girls, Flor and Adela. The mother Maricia, has lived with her children in a one room house for the past year. This house has been loaned to the family to live in. Imagine a house smaller than my bedroom. This is where Maricia, and her children live. We went to visit with them on Monday and Tuesday. Two days ago, when we went to visit, she and her family were walking the goats (there’s like 7 goats, 3 dogs, a pig, a cat, and lots of chickens running around the place). They were walking towards the well where they hand wash their clothes. So we stayed and washed clothes with them. We will be visiting them probably at least a couple times a week.
Here at the base, I also washed my clothes. The washer is a large tub full of soapy water, which I dumped my clothes into. Then we used plungers to agitate the water and wash the clothes. Then we rinsed them out and hung them up to dry. Pictures to come later showing my awesome expertise in clothes washing. (ha)
Tuesday we also went to the orphanage in the morning. Its called “Pan de Vida,” and its not really an orphanage, more like a foster home for children whose parents are addicts or in prison. We will also be visiting that place a lot in the next 2 months while I am here in Mexico. Pictures will come another time from this place. I’m excited to hangout with the kids at the home while I am here training for Nicaragua.
Mexico so far has been awesome. The weather has been rainy for the first couple days but now it is hot hot hot! Im excited to see what we will be learning the next couple weeks!
